Obama wins Iowa; secures seven electoral votes
11/04/08 | BY MIKE GLOVER

DES MOINES (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama has won Iowa's seven electoral votes, claiming a crucial swing state and scoring yet another win in the state where precinct caucuses in January put him on the road to the Democratic presidential nomination.

The call was based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

Obama had built a larger field organization in Iowa than Republican John McCain and had a longer campaign history in the state. Both paid off as Obama won a state that four years ago narrowly backed President Bush.

With the win in Iowa, Obama completed a sweep throughout the upper Midwest.

Exit polls showed Obama winning by big margins in vote-rich eastern Iowa and in the central part of the state. He was even competitive in the overwhelmingly Republican west.
